Clomiphene is an FDA-approved oral medication used to treat infertility in women. It stimulates the release of hormones necessary for ovulation. It belongs to a class of medication called ovulatory stimulants. Clomiphene citrate also began the era of assisted reproductive technology.

Clomiphene was first approved by the FDA in 1967. Originally developed to treat female infertility, it has been recognized for its use in male hypogonadism and fertility treatments.

  • Clomid.

It is also available as a generic medicine under the name Rejun tablets.

Medical Uses Of Clomiphene

Clomiphene citrate tablet uses include- 

  • Clomiphene is prescribed to induce ovulation (egg production) in women with irregular cycles who wish to become pregnant. 
  • Polycystic Ovary Syndrome (PCOS) management. 
  • It also helps with fibrocystic breasts, menstrual abnormalities, and persistent breast milk production. 
  • Male Infertility due to low testosterone or low sperm count. 

How Clomiphene Works?

Clomiphene works by blocking estrogen receptors in the brain, which stimulates the hypothalamus to release more gonadotropin-releasing hormone (GnRH). This increases the production of FSH (Follicle-Stimulating Hormone) and LH (Luteinizing Hormone). This helps in the development and maturation of-

  • ovarian follicle.
  • Subsequent development and function of the corpus luteum.
  • ovulation.

This results in pregnancy. 

Clomiphene Dosages 

Clomiphene is available mainly in one dose, 50mg. Women are prescribed to take 50 mg per day for 5 days, starting on the fifth day of the menstrual cycle. For spermatogenesis induction, it is advised for 25 days and 5 days off. 

Always follow the prescribed dose recommended by your doctor.

How To Take Clomiphene?

  • Take Clomiphene exactly as prescribed, usually once daily.
  • Swallow the tablet with water. 
  • Take the medicine at the same time each day.
  • Do not exceed the recommended duration or dosage.

Clomiphene Warnings

  • Clomiphene intake is not recommended for those with liver disease, abnormal uterine bleeding, or ovarian cysts not due to PCOS.
  • Use cautiously if you have a history of blood clots.
  • Long-term therapy is not advised beyond a total of 6 cycles.
  • Pregnant women should avoid taking this medication. 
  • Use clomiphene tablets with caution if you suffer from-
    • Uncontrolled thyroid.
    • Pituitary tumor.
    • Endometrial cancer.
  • It may cause multiple ovulation, thus increasing the risk of multiple pregnancies.

  • When using the medication, it is advised to monitor the patient’s fasting lipid panel.

  • Do not drive or operate machinery if you experience blurred vision or dizziness.
