What Is Finasteride?

Finasteride is a prescription drug that belongs to the drug class called 5-alpha-reductase inhibitor. It helps in treating Benign Prostatic Hyperplasia (BPH). 

History Of Finasteride

Finasteride is a drug that was developed by Merck & Co. in the 1980s. In 1992, it was approved to treat Benign Prostatic Hyperplasia (BPH). In 1997, it was also approved for the treatment of male pattern hair loss after hair regrowth was observed in BPH patients.  In 2006-2013, the patient expired and the generic versions of the medication became widely available globally.

The brand name of Finasteride is Proscar. 

Formulations

Finasteride is available in oral formulation that can be swallowed as a whole with a glass of water. The color and shape of the tablet vary by brand and strength. 

Medical Uses Of Finasteride

Finasteride tablets are primarily used in the treatment of Benign Prostatic Hyperplasia.  It is a condition that causes enlargement of the prostate glands. 

The tablets help in treating the symptoms such as:

• shrinks an enlarged prostate 
• improves urinary flow and reduces the symptoms such as:
• frequent urination 
• difficulty in urination 
• weak stream. 
• lowers the chances of prostate surgery. 

How Finasteride Works?

Finasteride works by blocking the enzyme 5-alpha-reductase, which converts testosterone into dihydrotestosterone. The hormone causes Prostate enlargement. By reducing the DHT hormone levels, it helps in shrinking the prostate, easing urinary symptoms. The effects start in 3-6 months after consistent daily use. 

Finasteride Dosage And Forms

Finasteride tablets are available in the dosage strengths of 1 mg and 5 mg. Generally, 5 mg is advisable for treating the symptoms of BPH. However, the proper dosage consultation should always be taken after proper consultations with a doctor for complete safety and efficacy. You must continue the use of the medication as it usually reverses the effects within 6-12 months. 

How To Take Finasteride?
